The Al Maktoum College, Dundee Handicap (3.40) at Ayr on Friday is about as competitive as sprint handicaps come, but Compton Heights is clearly thriving in his new surroundings and can record the biggest win of his career so far. The son of Compton Place didn’t see a racecourse until he was four years old and, having missed all of last year, has really come to himself since joining Keith Dalgleish from Jim Goldie in May.
His latest effort, when beaten a neck by half brother Lexington Place in a 0-85 contest at Musselburgh last month, was his best yet and a 4lb rise in the weights may not prevent him from supplementing his course and distance win on his seasonal debut in July. That win came on soft going and, having also won on good to firm and good, he should have no problem with underfoot conditions, even if the forecast patchy rain arrives in Ayrshire. Despite the competitive nature of the race, he could go well at rewarding odds.
